Thunderbolt 4 vs USB-C: same port, very different cable

Short answer

USB-C is just the connector shape — it says nothing about performance. Thunderbolt 4 is a certification that uses that shape and guarantees 40Gbps data, dual 4K display support and 100W charging. Two identical-looking cables can differ 20× in speed; the logo on the cable is the only tell.

Why "USB-C" tells you almost nothing

The USB-C connector can carry anything from USB 2.0 (480Mbps — the cable bundled with many gadgets for charging) to USB4 at 40Gbps. Same plug, wildly different wiring inside. This is how a fast SSD ends up crawling: the drive was never the problem, the anonymous cable was. Is Thunderbolt 4 the same as USB4?
