Short answer

No — wireless charging itself doesn't damage batteries. What ages a lithium battery is heat and time spent at charge extremes, regardless of how the power arrives. A badly-aligned pad generates extra heat; a magnetically-aligned Qi2 charger largely eliminates that, making modern wireless charging effectively as battery-friendly as a cable.

What actually wears a battery

  • Heat — the number one ager. Chemistry degrades faster above ~35°C, which is why a phone charging on a car dashboard in a UAE summer suffers more than a year of nightstand charging.
  • Time at 100% or near 0% — batteries prefer the middle. Modern phones manage this automatically with optimised charging.
  • Charge cycles — every battery has a finite count, consumed identically whether power came by cable or coil.

Where the myth came from

Early Qi pads earned the reputation honestly: put the phone down off-centre and the misaligned coils wasted energy as heat directly into the battery, sometimes all night. Why does my phone get warm on a wireless charger?

Mild warmth is normal energy-transfer loss. Noticeably hot means poor alignment (upgrade to magnetic), a thick case, or an uncertified pad — all fixable causes, none inherent to wireless charging.

Does fast wireless charging wear the battery faster than slow?
