GaN vs silicon chargers: what's the difference?

Short answer
GaN (gallium nitride) chargers do the same job as silicon chargers but switch power more efficiently — so they're roughly 40% smaller, run noticeably cooler, and can charge several devices from one plug. In 2026 there's no good reason to buy a new silicon charger.
What is a GaN charger?
Every charger converts wall power to the voltage your device needs by switching current thousands of times per second. Traditional chargers switch with silicon transistors; GaN chargers use gallium nitride, a newer semiconductor that switches faster and wastes far less energy as heat.
