Thunderbolt 4 vs USB-C: same port, very different cable

Short answer
USB-C is just the connector shape — it says nothing about performance. Thunderbolt 4 is a certification that uses that shape and guarantees 40Gbps data, dual 4K display support and 100W charging. Two identical-looking cables can differ 20× in speed; the logo on the cable is the only tell.
Why "USB-C" tells you almost nothing
The USB-C connector can carry anything from USB 2.0 (480Mbps — the cable bundled with many gadgets for charging) to USB4 at 40Gbps. Same plug, wildly different wiring inside. This is how a fast SSD ends up crawling: the drive was never the problem, the anonymous cable was. If a "fast" device is underperforming, suspect the cable before anything else — the full diagnostic logic is in our SSD speed guide.
What the Thunderbolt 4 badge guarantees
- 40Gbps, always — the full rate at up to 2m cable length, certified, not "up to".
- Dual 4K displays (or one 8K) through a single cable.
- 100W charging alongside data and video simultaneously.
- Compatibility floor — every TB4 cable is also a fully-featured USB-C cable, backwards compatible with everything. It's the one cable that can't be wrong.

Read the port, not just the cable
A lightning-bolt icon beside your laptop's USB-C port means Thunderbolt. No icon usually means standard USB-C — a TB4 cable still works there, at the port's own maximum. The chain runs at the slowest link: port, cable, or device.
Frequently asked questions
Do Thunderbolt 4 cables work with iPhone and Android?
Yes — they're fully-featured USB-C cables, so they charge and sync any USB-C phone at that phone's maximum speed. Overkill for a phone alone, ideal as the one cable that handles everything.
Is Thunderbolt 4 the same as USB4?
Close cousins. USB4 can reach 40Gbps but many implementations run 20Gbps; Thunderbolt 4 mandates the full feature set. TB4 is effectively USB4 with every optional box ticked and certified.
Why are Thunderbolt cables more expensive?
Active electronics in the connectors, tighter shielding, and mandatory certification. That's also why a genuine TB4 cable at 2m still delivers 40Gbps while a cheap "USB-C" cable quietly doesn't.
