Why is my phone charging slowly? 7 fixes that work

Short answer
Nine times out of ten it's not the phone — it's an underpowered charger, a worn or non-data cable, or lint packed into the charging port. Work through the seven fixes below in order; most people find the culprit by step three.
The 7 fixes, in order of likelihood
- 1. Check the charger's wattage — the classic 5W cube trickle-charges a modern phone in 3+ hours. You need 20–30W for fast charging; the wattage is printed in tiny text on the brick (look for "Output").
- 2. Swap the cable — cables die invisibly. Internally broken wires and worn connectors silently downgrade charging speed. Test with a known-good cable before blaming anything else.
- 3. Clean the port — pocket lint compacts into the charging port until the connector no longer seats fully. Power off and gently clear it with a wooden toothpick — never metal.
- 4. Beat the heat — phones deliberately slow charging when hot to protect the battery. Charging on a sunny dashboard or under a pillow in a UAE summer guarantees throttling. Cool phone, full speed.
- 5. Stop charging through a dead USB port — laptop USB-A ports and airline seat sockets deliver 5–10W. Wall charger beats them every time.
- 6. Close the drain — GPS navigation, hotspot mode or gaming while charging can consume most of what's coming in. Aeroplane mode is the fastest legal charging boost that exists.
- 7. Check battery health — batteries past ~80% health (Settings → Battery on both platforms) both drain faster and charge less predictably. Below 80%, a battery replacement outperforms any charger upgrade.

The 15-minute test
Charge from ~30% for exactly 15 minutes. A healthy phone on a proper 20–30W charger should gain 25–35%. Under 15%? The problem is confirmed hardware — charger, cable, port or battery, in that order of suspicion.
When it's the charger, choose once
If steps 1–2 exposed the culprit, replace it with something that covers everything you own — our wattage guide gives the exact numbers, and a multi-port GaN charger solves the phone, the earbuds and the laptop in one socket.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my phone charge slowly only at night?
That's usually intentional — Optimised/Adaptive Charging learns your alarm time and deliberately slows overnight charging to reduce battery wear, finishing just before you wake. It's a feature; you can disable it in battery settings if you prefer raw speed.
Does using the phone while charging damage it?
No damage — it just splits incoming power between the screen and the battery, so charging slows. Heavy gaming while fast-charging adds heat, which the phone manages by throttling one or the other.
Is wireless charging slower than a cable?
Generally yes — 15W wireless versus 20–30W wired — but a well-aligned Qi2 magnetic charger closes most of the everyday gap. See our Qi2 guide.
