What wattage charger do I need? Phone, tablet & laptop

Short answer
Phones fast-charge at 20–30W, tablets at 30–45W, thin laptops at 60–65W, and performance laptops at 96–140W. Higher wattage never damages a device — it only takes what it needs — so one good 65–140W GaN charger can safely cover everything you own.
The wattage cheat sheet
- Earbuds & wearables — 5W. Anything charges them.
- Phones — 20–30W hits maximum fast-charge speed on iPhones and most Androids; flagship Androids with proprietary fast charging may use more with their own brick.
- Tablets — 30–45W. An iPad Pro will happily draw 45W.
- Thin & light laptops — 60–65W (MacBook Air, most ultrabooks).
- Performance laptops — 96–140W (MacBook Pro 14/16", gaming and workstation ultrabooks with USB-C PD 3.1).
Does a higher-wattage charger damage my phone?
No — and this is the most persistent charging myth. With USB Power Delivery, your device negotiates the voltage and current it wants; a 140W charger gives a phone exactly the 25W it asks for. Wattage on the box is a ceiling, not a force. What can harm devices is an uncertified charger with poor voltage regulation — which is a quality problem, not a wattage problem.

Buying one charger for everything
Add up what you'll charge simultaneously, then add ~20% headroom. Laptop (65W) + phone (25W) + earbuds (5W) = 95W → a 100–140W multi-port GaN charger. Check the per-port split table: a "140W" charger may cap individual ports lower when several are in use. Why GaN specifically? Smaller, cooler, more efficient — the full case is in our GaN vs silicon guide.
The 70% rule
A charger cruising at 70% of its rated load runs cooler and lasts years longer than one working at its ceiling. If your total is 90W, buy 120–140W — the price difference is small, the lifespan difference isn't.
Frequently asked questions
Can I charge a laptop with a phone charger?
Usually yes, slowly. A 20W phone charger will trickle-charge most USB-C laptops when idle or asleep, but it may lose ground while you work. For real charging, match the laptop's rated wattage.
Is it OK to leave devices charging overnight?
Yes — modern devices stop drawing power when full and manage the battery themselves. Use a certified charger; heat and poor regulation are the real enemies, not charge time.
Do watts affect charging speed at all?
Up to the device's own limit, yes — moving a phone from a 5W to a 25W charger is dramatic. Beyond the device's ceiling, extra watts change nothing for that device but let you charge more devices at once.
